This silkscreen edition is based on Julia Chiang’s tondo painting Squeeze So Tight And Hold It made in 2021. The print is produced using 11 colors to capture the subtleties in the original painting, echoing its varied intricacies. The work recreates a spontaneity and looseness of poured paint along with the controlled attempts of making and remaking marks and shapes.  It speaks to the artist’s preoccupation with cause and effect regarding forces of nature. Chiang’s working method can be meditative, emerging from a consideration of the body’s physical sense of self within and beyond. Her signature markings create a push and pull or rise and fall, analogous to the movements of our bodies, oceans, the earth and humanity at large.

Julia Chiang

Julia Chiang was born in 1978 in Atlantic City (NJ) and lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her degree in Art History and Studio Art from New York University. Her painterly process is slow, controlled while spontaneous. Organic shapes coalesce on the picture plane in varying densities of paint, and with amoebic fervor, scrimmage for territory.

Her work has been exhibited internationally and solo exhibitions of her work include Remember That Time When What, Nanzuka, Tokyo, and Salt On My Skin, Nicola Vassell Gallery, New York (both 2023); Holding My Breath Moving Closer Closer, The Modern Institute, Glasgow, and Julia Chiang, The Journal Gallery, New York (both 2020); Pump And Bump, Nanzuka, Tokyo, and Spit Sweat Shhh, The Modern Institute, Glasgow (both 2019). Public projects include the Rockaway Hotel Mural in Far Rockaway, Queens, and the RxART mural at the Nappi Wellness Institute, SUNY Upstate, Syracuse.
