André Butzer

Born in 1973, André Butzer’s daring fusion of European Expressionism and American ready-made pop culture, the conceptual repetition and apparent seriality of his iconic characters as well as his insistence on bare human dignity have been testament to his courageous and continuous inquiry into societal contradictions and social non-conformity.

»Like Disney figures painted by Edvard Munch« (Guillermo Solana), Butzer’s Woman, the Peace-Siemens and the Wanderer embody the recurring extremes of history as emblems of human existence. For him »paintings are localizations of the greatest despair and the greatest hope« and this is exactly why »they come closest to the very joy and aid we are in dire need of.«

Since 1994, André Butzer has had numerous solo exhibitions in renowned institutions such as the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; Museo Novecento, Florence; Yuz Museum, Shanghai; IKOB Musée d’Art Contemporain, Eupen; Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover; Kunsthalle Nuremberg.

Works of his are in the permanent collections of the Musée d’art moderne de Paris; of both LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art and MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, Berlin; Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, Bremen; Carré d’Art, Nîmes; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Space K, Seoul; among many others.

Today, André Butzer is one of the internationally most recognized painters of his generation.
