This six-color lithograph is based on a photograph by Ari Marcopoulos, Frank, Cooper Square, taken in 1995. The artist recalls that the photograph was “shot on St. Marks Place by The Cube … [a corten sculpture built in 1967 by Tony Rosenthal] a staple in the neighborhood, which was a popular place to meet in the early evening for skaters and friends. This was before mobile phones, so places to meet were crucial for spontaneous meetups.” Marcopoulos’ photograph captures the essence of a time and place when skate culture dominated New York City’s East Village.
