Monograph
A critique of the various guises of oppression and violence in our modern societies, both in Western and Muslim culture, the work of Adel Abdessemed takes the form of video, installation, scultpure, and drawing. Sometimes reduced to a simple word, as in “MohammedKarlpolpot” (1999), a condensation of names evoking totalitarism and religion, and sometimes complex installations such as “Black House,” a work in progress to be built in Jerusalem, Abdessemed’s practice belongs to a new generation of artists who appeared recently on the French art scene, looking to offer another perspective on culture and identity.
Born in Algeria in 1971, Adel Abdesemed lives and works in Paris. He has been shown in various international venues, such as P.S.1, New York, the Lyon Biennale, the Venice Biennale, and the Palais de Tokyo, Paris.
Published in association with Le Plateau, Paris, and La Criée, Rennes.
